THT-EX comes from Taiwan, an island known globally for semiconductors, precision manufacturing and an engineering culture built around solving difficult problems. Our own journey began not with hazardous-area lighting, but with a fundamental challenge: how to keep electrical systems reliably connected in demanding outdoor environments.

Our early engineering experience covered waterproof, medical, GPS, LED and wireless connectivity, with extensive work in marine applications. On vessels, connections support antennas, radar, autopilot and engine systems, sensors, navigation, control systems and wireless communications. Salt, moisture, vibration and continuous outdoor exposure taught us an enduring lesson: reliability is never determined by a single component. It depends on how the entire system works together.

In 2011, we carried this experience into hazardous areas. We soon discovered that explosion protection was only the beginning. Certification is essential, but a certified product must still survive the real world. Heat, salt, moisture, corrosion, chemicals, dust, vibration and UV exposure continue to challenge equipment throughout its service life. Installation conditions, electrical interfaces and maintenance requirements add further complexity.

This changed the question we asked ourselves. Instead of simply asking, “How do we make an explosion-protected product?”, we began asking: “What does the customer actually need to make this application work safely and reliably?” That question became the foundation of our One-Stop Hazardous Area Solutions philosophy.

For THT-EX, one-stop does not mean selling everything, nor does it mean putting hundreds of products into one catalogue. It means helping customers address the complete engineering challenge — connection, application, installation, environment and certification — as one integrated problem.

This philosophy has taken us beyond conventional hazardous-area lighting into industrial lighting and specialized solutions for demanding applications. High-temperature explosion-protected lighting, UVC solutions for HVAC systems, intelligent visual safety systems and specialized electrical solutions were developed because real applications presented problems that standard products could not always solve.

Many of our developments began with a simple message from a customer:“Our existing solution does not work here.”
For us, that is not the end of a discussion. It is where engineering begins. Global manufacturers are highly effective in large, established and standardized markets. Our role is different. We focus on specialized and medium-volume applications where customers need flexibility, customization and closer engineering support — particularly where requirements fall between conventional product categories.


Certification adds another dimension. IECEx, ATEX, UL, CML, TIIS, TS and other national systems address different markets, while major industrial operators may impose their own specifications and approved-vendor requirements. The important question is therefore not simply, “Is this product certified?” but “Is this the right solution, with the right certification, for this application, environment, market and customer?”

Looking ahead, hazardous-area engineering will increasingly combine explosion protection with extreme-environment reliability, energy efficiency, intelligent visual communication, sensing, connectivity and AI-assisted monitoring. As industrial systems become more connected, the boundaries between individual products will matter less, while the engineering of the complete application will matter more.

A hazardous-area lighting purchase can pass a certification review and still create trouble after installation. Heat, corrosive air, vibration, dust and continuous duty expose weaknesses that rarely appear in a catalog comparison. Buyers therefore face a narrower question than whether equipment carries the required marks. They must determine whether the supplier understands how certified products behave after years inside demanding plants. Long-term performance begins with application fit. A luminaire designed for a moderate indoor zone may not suit a coastal petrochemical site or a high-temperature process area. Housing design, thermal control, sealing and material selection all affect service life.
